Stress and the nervous system are closely connected, which is why it can sometimes feel impossible to “just relax,” even when you want to.

Your nervous system is responsible for controlling how your body responds to the world around you. When you encounter stress, whether it’s a busy schedule, lack of sleep, or emotional strain, your body activates its fight or flight response. Your heart rate increases, muscles tighten, and your body prepares to react.

This response is designed to protect you in short-term situations. The problem is that many of us live in a near-constant state of low-level stress. Instead of turning off, the nervous system stays stuck in that heightened state.

This is why you might feel wired but tired, struggle to fully relax, or notice that your body always feels tense. Even when you sit down at the end of the day, your body may not get the signal that it’s safe to unwind.

Over time, this can impact sleep, digestion, focus, and overall well-being. It can also contribute to chronic tension in the neck, shoulders, and back, creating a cycle that feels hard to break.

Helping the nervous system regulate is key to managing stress more effectively. Practices like deep breathing, gentle movement, and spending time outdoors can all support this process.

Chiropractic care adds another layer of support by helping restore proper communication within the nervous system. When the spine is moving well and alignment is supported, your body is better able to shift out of stress mode and into a state of rest and recovery.

If you’ve ever felt like your body won’t “turn off,” it’s not a lack of willpower. It’s your nervous system asking for support.
