Backpacks are a back-to-school essential, but when worn or packed incorrectly, they can quickly become a source of pain and posture problems for kids.

Studies show that more than 50% of students carry backpacks that exceed the recommended weight limit. This extra strain can cause spinal misalignments, shoulder tension, and even long-term postural issues. Thankfully, a few simple changes can make all the difference.

Here’s what to watch for:

  • The backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of your child’s body weight.

  • Choose a pack with padded, adjustable straps and a waist or chest belt for added support.

  • Encourage kids to use both shoulder straps and avoid slinging the bag over one side.

  • Pack heavier items closest to the back and avoid unnecessary extras.

In our office, we often see children with sore necks, rounded shoulders, and mid-back pain—all linked to improper backpack use. Chiropractic care can relieve the tension and misalignments that result from poor posture, but prevention is key.

We’re happy to check your child’s posture, assess their backpack fit, and offer tips to keep them aligned all year long. A quick posture screening now could prevent bigger issues down the road—and help your child stand tall and pain-free.
